Influence of plastic fines content on the liquefaction susceptibility of sands: monotonic loading

Abstract The paper presents an experimental study on the effect of plastic fines content undrained behavior and liquefaction susceptibility sand–fines mixtures under monotonic loading. results triaxial compression tests conducted Hostun sand with varying amount (0–20%) type (kaolin calcigel bentonite) are presented. specimens were prepared different initial densities using moist tamping method consolidated at two isotropic effective stresses. demonstrate that for both types fines, increase in leads to a more contractive response lower values mobilized deviatoric stress. Despite similar relative density content, sand–kaolin showed than sand–calcigel specimens. steady-state lines (SSLs) e – p ´ space generally move downwards increasing clay content. While slopes SSLs clean 10 20% kaolin quite similar, SSL containing 10% or run steeper flatter, respectively. inclination q–p ′ plane was found independent observed be susceptible instability flow mixtures.
